Across the U.S., Day 5 - Rawlins (WY) to Custer (SD) & Mount Rushmore

Wyoming is indeed the state of the big sky of the wild, wild west. I was again amazed today about this wonderful, wide open, endless landscape. On my way, I saw happy cattle, horses and lots of deer.

Mid-day it was time for another state I had not set my foot yet: South Dakota. One major tourist destination is Mount Rushmore, located in the Black Hills area in the southwest part of the state.

As there is rain in the forecast for tomorrow, I headed directly over to Mount Rushmore and was lucky to meet the four gentlemen in sunshine, surrounded by some photogenic clouds. Mount Rushmore National Monument represents the first 130 years of the history of the U.S. The sculptures of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln (from left to right) were carved in the granite rock 1927 - 1941 by Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers. The four had attracted ~ 3 Mio. visitors last year.

And I have to post this one as well, which our friend Mark shared with us. :-)

This night I will spent in the Bavarian Inn (Custer), just 30 min. from Mount Rushmore.

More to come.

  1. Great trip, even if it is in a car. I love cross-country treks...

  2. NO, REALLY? The Bavarian Inn? Same interests, same places. We also stayed at the Bavarian Inn in September! Good choice, Andrea, haha.

Glad to see the four Gentlemen from the Canadian Side now. So funny!

Nice rubber ducky. Could you keep it?

    1. My first response was indeed to keep the rubber ducky. Then, I saw that is was Made in China, and left it to amuse the next guest. :-)

  4. Glad you liked Kanas City! To answer your question Fountains temporarily blue, for the Royals during the World Series. We have seen them many other colors too!
It's a little known fact here, but you can take a bus from the airport to downtown.
The mural you saw is misleading and is not the 18th and Vine district, it's actually the Power and Light Entertainment district. In the actual Jazz District there are two good museums, the Jazz Museum http://americanjazzmuseum.org/ and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. http://www.nlbm.com/
Jackstack is good, but Joe's Kansas City (formerly Oklahoma Joes) is amazing!

  5. Jeff, thanks so much for the updates. I made the correction on the 'Power and Light Entertainment District' picture and next time I go to Kansas City I have an updated list of what to visit and where to eat! :-)
